For thousands of years, an ancient mysterious substance called shilajit has been held sacred in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine. This resinous, tar-like substance, mainly from the rocks of the Himalayan ranges, possesses an interesting mix of minerals, fulvic acid, and antioxidants that rejuvenate and energize the body.
Often referred to as “the destroyer of weakness” in Sanskrit, shilajit, also known as Shilajatu, Silajatu, and Silajat, among many other names, is slowly gaining popularity worldwide for its promising health benefits. What is Shilajit?
Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin that oozes out from mountainous rocks after centuries of organic decomposition by heat and pressure. Its unique composition, along with this natural process, gives the substance a dense concentration of trace minerals, humic acid, and most notably, fulvic acid, which acts as a highly potent antioxidant. The primary regions from which silajatu is harvested include the Himalayas, Altai Mountains, and Caucasus Mountains.
Interestingly, silajat is not something recently found. It has been used as Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and is valued there as a “rasayana” or rejuvenator, often used to increase strength, stamina, immunity, and general vitality.
Composition of Silajatu
Silajat contains over 84 minerals in their ionic forms. Among those minerals include iron, zinc, magnesium, and copper, plus fulvic acid. This is a role that it plays very vitally because of the fact that it helps facilitate nutrient assimilation on a cellular basis. Since we ingest the minerals into our body systems, the acid takes the absorbed nutrients into cells to make those nutrients available for use on the bodily levels.

Apart from the mineral supplement, the health benefits of silajat lie in the presence of dibenzo-alpha-pyrones that contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds which help decrease cellular damage and combat oxidative stress.
